If you haven’t been careful with the food that you eat and now complain of sore throat, shortness of breath, nausea and heartburn, you are probably suffering from symptoms of acid reflux disease. Acid reflux disease is a condition where stomach acids reflux from the stomach to the esophagus causing pain. Of course, due to unhealthy eating of most people, acid build ups are all too common.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux Disease

Heartburn is one of the most common symptoms of acid reflux disease. However, heartburn does not automatically spell out acid reflux as this may be confused with chest pains associated to other diseases like chronic cough, asthma, pulmonary embolus, pneumonia and heart attack.

Heartburn or pyrosis got its name because of the burning sensation on the breastbone and not the actual heart, although, there are some cases of heart ailments where heartburn is also a prevalent symptom. Aside from the damages the acids can do to the esophagus, untreated heartburn can cause swelling of the esophagus which eventually leads to ulcers or bleeding. This may also result to a condition called Barrett’s esophagus which increases the risk of esophageal cancer so any indication of heartburn should be looked at accordingly.

Other symptoms of acid reflux disease are the nagging chest pain, bitter taste in the mouth, irritation of the throat that doesn’t cause actual vomiting and in some instances, cases of tooth decay and difficulty in swallowing.

Identifying the symptoms of acid reflux disease is helpful in order to find the right medication for treating it. More so, eating habits need careful analysis once you’ve identified that you have acid reflux. Complete avoidance of acid rich food is not applicable to everyone since our body reacts differently and certain types of food that triggers acid reflux vary. A decrease in the intake of spicy foods, alcohol and caffeinated drinks, mints and fatty foods is a good start.
